Paper 2 Composition Scheme of Work

This resource is a Composition scheme of work for Paper 2 of the CIE IGCSE First Language English 0500/0990 specification.
If you require the Directed Writing scheme of work, or the full Paper 2 scheme of work, these will be available in February 2026.
 
This is a thorough and detailed 5–7 week scheme of work designed to teach the essential reading and writing skills required to excel in Paper 2 Composition.
It is ideal for introducing and developing narrative and descriptive writing, ensuring pupils clearly understand how to write for different composition writing types. Everything needed to teach this unit is included, with all resources ready to print and use.
 
Lessons follow a clear, step by step structure, with each skill built progressively through:
• Explicit modelling
• Structured scaffolding
• Guided practice
• Independent application
 
A wide range of composition style questions are covered. Each question is carefully unpacked so pupils understand:
• What the task is asking
• How to plan effectively
• How to shape successful responses
The assessment objectives are explicitly taught and revisited throughout, helping pupils understand the skills being assessed and how to demonstrate them clearly in their writing.
 
The scheme includes several exam style questions, including one designed for use as an end of unit assessment.
For each question type, pupils are supported with:

• Non examples that reflect common errors and misconceptions
• Clear discussion of what makes writing effective
This approach helps pupils avoid typical mistakes and build confidence with exam expectations.
